The type of survey site you should use depends on your ultimate needs. What your survey is about, the types of question formats you need, and whether you need results that are accurate in terms of your ability to make claims about "people in general" (i.e. how are you going to get people to take your survey). Different survey software are better at different things and you should pick the one that meets your goals the best.

In general, we have found many of the free systems lacking for truly high quality survey research, though they may be okay for quick, informal polling. Most free systems lack flexibility in question formats and randomization options, and many rely on respondents who have signed up for a panel (and there is no indication that people who are searching to sign-up to take surveys are representative of all the people on the internet, let alone all people in the general population. Given our own needs, we brought our survey system in house so we can better control the survey, provide better quality checks with the data collected, and offer our clients more powerful question formats and questionnaire options.
